Green Bay Packers Season Preview
The Green Bay Packers had an outstanding 2007 season and came up just short of a Super Bowl berth after a disappointing loss at home to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game. It was one of quarterback Brett Favre's best seasons ever as a pro, as he turned back Father Time and finished second in MVP voting. However, Favre announced a couple months after the end of the season that he was retiring, which came as a surprise given his strong season and how close the Packers were and are to being a Super Bowl team. We have been down this road with Favre before, as the quarterback has said he would retire only to change his mind a few times now. It appears this time may be no different. Favre wants to return to the Packers for the 2008 season and might even want to play beyond that. It looks like a slam dunk for the Packers, but is it? The team feels that Favre told them he was retiring and did so for the right reasons, and they are eager to move forward with Aaron Rodgers as their starter. It seems likely that Favre will either spend 2008 as the team's backup, be traded to another club or decide all of this isn't worth it and slip back into retirement. Whether it's Favre or Rodgers at the helm, the quarterback will have plenty of offensive weapons to work with in Green Bay. Veteran wide receiver Donald Driver is one of the most underappreciated in the business, while fellow young wideouts Greg Jennings and James Jones have a ton of potential. As far as the backfield goes, running back Ryan Grant inherited the starter's job a few games into the 2007 season and had a breakout year. He figures to have more success this season, and backup Brandon Jackson is said to have worked really hard this offseason after a disappointing rookie campaign. The defense is very solid and balanced, with linebacker Nick Barnett considered the leader of the unit. Cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Al Harris and defensive end Aaron Kampman are also impact players. With Favre, this team should be a Super Bowl contender. With Rodgers, the jury is out. He looked pretty good last year in relief of Favre against the Cowboys, and that type of play on a consistent basis should earn the Packers the NFC North division title and make them a championship contender.
