The Chicago Bears jumped out to an early 10-0 lead but couldn't hold onto it in a 31-24 loss to the Houston Texans. The loss proved costly to the Bears, as it pushed them out of the NFC North title picture and playoff contention. Quarterback Kyle Orton had a ......

Chicago Bears Season Preview

It was a disappointing 2007 season for the Chicago Bears, as they managed to miss the playoffs because of yet more poor quarterback play and a number of key injuries.

The team had major issues at quarterback last season and inexplicably did not do anything to address those concerns in the offseason.

The Bears failed to use an early or even mid-round draft pick to select a quarterback, and they actually re-signed both Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton to contracts in the offseason.

Both proved yet again last year that they are nowhere near starting material in the NFL and incapable of putting a game on their back.

However, the team did address its running back situation, releasing the disappointing Cedric Benson after he had two encounters with police in the offseason.

The Bears went ahead and selected a running back early in the NFL Draft and appear comfortable letting him compete with backup Adrian Peterson for the starting job. The team may also sign a veteran free agent like Shaun Alexander as insurance.

The Bears took a couple of hits at the wide receiver position as well, losing speedy wideout Bernard Berrian and veteran Mushin Muhammad in free agency.

As has been the case for the past several seasons, the team's best scoring options are special teams return specialist Devin Hester and their strong defensive unit.

The Bears would like to get Hester much more involved on the offensive side of the ball, but he isn't a great route runner and tends to have a case of the dropsies. They have tried to utilize his speed on reverses and trick plays.

The defense should be pretty strong again, although the unit fell back a bit in 2007. Linebacker Brian Urlacher will look to rebound from a disappointing and injury-filled 2007 to get back to his All-Pro level in 2008.

While Urlacher is overrated in most circles, he is still one of the best linebackers in the NFL and the leader of the defense.

The Bears aren't likely to make the playoffs in 2008 unless they can get more consistent play at the quarterback position and the defense can rise to its level of play from the 2006 season.
