It seems like every year over the past decade, the Cardinals have been predicted to finally have a breakout season. However, it may finally come true in 2008.
The biggest issue for the Cardinals to settle coming out of training camp is their quarterback situation. The immature, inexperienced and so far disappointing Matt Leinart missed nearly all of last season with a broken collarbone.
The injury allowed veteran Kurt Warner significant time under center, and he played pretty well despite his penchant for turnovers. The Cardinals are saying Leinart is their guy this year, but I remain unconvinced.
The good news is that whoever plays quarterback will have plenty of help around him despite wide receiver Bryant Johnson heading to San Francisco.
Wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are in their prime and form one of the top wideout duos in the NFL. The Cardinals drafted Early Doucet in April, and he could be a fantastic third wideout.
In the backfield, Edgerrin James rebounded to have a solid second season with the Cardinals, but there is no doubt he is in the twilight of his career.
Defensively, the team brought back linebacker Karlos Dansby, who is the leader of the unit. The defense probably won't improve much from last year to this year, but even the slightest uptick would really help considering their explosive offense.
The team's biggest defensive strength is probably their secondary, where safety Adrian Wilson leads the way. Their best performance as a unit last year was against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as head coach Ken Whisenhunt used his knowledge of the team from all the time he spent coaching there to develop a great game plan.
If the Cardinals can get steady play from the quarterback position and some improvement on defense, they should be able to contend for the NFC West crown thanks to a division where parity reigns.
