Curry’s ex-girlfriend found deal

The ex-girlfriend of New York Knicks center Eddy Curry was found shot to death in a Chicago apartment. The woman also happened to be the mother of Curry’s three-year old son. Relatives of Curry say that the family is devastated by the news.
The woman’s nine-month old kid was also found shot to death. Curry’s son was found unharmed. Both of the deceased were discovered by relatives. She apparently had an ex-boyfriend that she had sought protection from and had a restraining order against, and police hope to talk with him. Chicago has had several, high-profile murders recently that have involved celebrities in one fashion or another. Police are offering little details of the ...

Ryan retains Schottenheimer

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has decided to retain Brian Schottenheimer as the team’s offensive coordinator heading into next year. Schottenheimer was one of the team’s top candidates for the head coaching job but lost out to Ryan, who the organization absolutely loved. He had been the offensive coordinator for the past three seasons but was unsure whether or not he would be allowed to return next year. It’s a similiar situation to what happened with Ryan last year, as he lost out to John Harbaugh in the head coaching search and then decided to return as defensive coordinator. Ryan said he understands the disappointment for Schottenheimer to not get the job and feels it will ...

Team update: Denver Nuggets
Posted on Wed, Jan 28 2009 at 11:45:14 AM by Steve

The Denver Nuggets are currently 29-15 and in first place in the Northwest division. That leaves the Nuggets two and a half games ahead of the upstart Portland Trailblazers in the division race. The Nuggets are 18-6 at home, which is usual for them. However, they have managed to stay above .500 on the road, where they are usually terrible. The trade of Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups seems to have really paid off. It has given the team the true point guard it has needed for several years now and added some toughness on the defensive end. They have even been able to overcome injuries to star forward Carmelo Anthony.

Garcia open to return

Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting quarterback Jeff Garcia said he is open to returning to the team next year. Garcia is now a free agent and some other teams from around the league may be interested in him. The quarterback was no fan of head coach Jon Gruden and hasn’t been shy about how happy he is to see him go. However, he fought through several injuries this season and seemed to wear down in the final weeks. That’s now what potential suitors want to see from a player who is almost 40 years old and entering the twilight of his career.

Team update: Memphis Grizzlies
Posted on Wed, Jan 28 2009 at 11:44:11 AM by Steve

The Memphis Grizzlies are currently 11-32 and buried deep in the cellar of the Southwest division. The Grizzlies are the only team in the division that doesn’t have a winning record, which they are clearly not close to accomplishing. The team continues to be in rebuilding mode but has already fired its coach because of disappointing results. There is no questioning that this team has some talent, but they are still missing some key pieces. There are certainly some pieces to build around, but the Grizzlies could use some more help on the wings.

Team update: Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are currently 25-19 and in fourth place in the Southwest division. However, they are only four and a half games out of first place, which is currently occupied by the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavericks are still having much the same problems as they are last year and the prior years. The team still can’t defend, which has been accentuated by the move to Jason Kidd at point guard. I’m sure the team would love to have Devin Harris back now, who has become an All-Star despite playing for a bad team.

Team update: Houston Rockets
Posted on Wed, Jan 28 2009 at 11:42:53 AM by Steve

The Houston Rockets are currently 28-17 and sitting in third place in the Southwest division. The Rockets are just two games behind the San Antonio Spurs for first place in the division and a half game behind the New Orleans Hornets for second place. It’s amazing that the Rockets have been able to hang so tough considering the key injuries to their three main stars. If they could somehow keep Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming and Ron Artest all healthy and on the court at the same time, they could be extremely dangerous. Artest has given this team an edge, which is exactly what they were hoping for when they traded for him. The team has been very tough to beat at home, going 15-5.

Team update: New Orleans Hornets
Posted on Wed, Jan 28 2009 at 11:42:18 AM by Steve

The New Orleans Hornets are currently 26-14 and two and a half games behind the San Antonio Spurs in the Southwest division. The Hornets sit in second place and have just a half game lead over the Houston Rockets and three game lead over the Dallas Mavericks. The team made a couple of key offseason additions, but so far they haven’t panned out quite as well as expected. The Hornets had hoped this is the year where they really took off and became the top team in the Western Conference. Chris Paul and David West continue to carry this team, but they really need one more star to step up.

Team update: San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are currently 29-14 and in first place in the Southwest division. They hold a game and a half lead over the New Orleans Hornets, who were projected by many to win the division. It’s funny how everyone always discounts the Spurs, especially after they get off to their traditionally slow start. Everyone knows that the Spurs start slow and pick it up as the season progresses, but people still count them out. They had to deal with injuries to Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker at the start of the season, but both are now healthy and playing well. The addition of shooting guard Roger Mason has also proven to be a huge signing and really improved their depth.

Terps embarassed by Duke, 85-44
Posted on Wed, Jan 28 2009 at 11:40:26 AM by Steve

The Maryland Terrapins have had success in Cameron Indoor Stadium before, but that was certainly not the case Saturday in an 85-44 loss. It was an embarassing performance in which the Terps trailed 40-15 at halftime and found themselves behind 60-20 just minutes into the second half. It was a sloppy performance that saw the Terps handle the ball carelessly and turn it over numerous times, resulting in easy baskets for Duke. Maryland wasn’t much better on defense, where they did a poor job of grabbing rebounds and didn’t cover Duke out on the perimeter. The Terps now must try and erase that game from their memory as they take on Boston College and try to get back to .500 in the conference.
