The USC Trojans used a crushing win on the road against the Virginia Cavaliers to jump two spots in the AP poll and move into the top spot.
The No. 1 Trojans may not be there for long though, as they have less than two weeks to prepare for a game against No. 3 Ohio State, who was formerly No. 2.
Georgia, the former No. 1, dropped back one spot to No. 2.
USC was helped by the fact that it was one of the few top teams who played a school from a major conference instead of a Division I-AA foe, although Virginia might not be far off from being in that class too.
Head coach Pete Carroll said that he understands how meaningless rankings are early in the season, but it does help to be at the top late in the year when its time to decide who gets to play in the national championship. |
