The San Francisco 49ers were riding high with their surprising 2-1 start and looking to take advantage of a banged up New Orleans team.
Instead, the 49ers got off to a slow start and were never able to recover, as two late touchdowns during junk time were too little too late in a 31-17 loss.
San Franciscos defense did an excellent job shutting down running back Reggie Bush, rendering him completely ineffective throughout the day.
They did a nice job on veteran running back Deuce McAllister as well, allowing just 73 yards on 20 carries, which works out to be less than four yards per carry.
However, they could not control the Saints explosive passing game despite the fact that several nondescript wide receivers were leading the way due to injuries.
The 49ers are going to need to get some improvement from their secondary if they expect to be able to compete for a playoff spot, even in the mediocre NFC West. |
