The Twins were not expected to compete for a playoff berth this year but find themselves in the division race anyways thanks to poor starts from the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians.

Minnesota, which is in a mini-rebuilding mode, is getting solid production from the middle of their lineup with catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau.

They are also getting some solid but somewhat inconsistent outings from their young starting pitchers, who are learning what life is like without ace Johan Santana.
