It took 91 holes, but Tiger Woods knee held up long enough to defeat Rocco Mediate in what became a 19-hole playoff and win the U.S. Open.
Woods was down one stroke heading into the 18th hold but sunk a par putt to move into a sudden death playoff.
Tiger was able come back on the first playoff holes and gain the win, leading to a thunderous roar from the crowd. However, there were certainly a good number of Mediate fans who wanted to see the heavy underdog pull it off.
It is the 14th major title for Woods and his third U.S. Open title. He has now won all four majors at least three times. Only Jack Nicklaus has accomplished that feat. |
