The Chicago Cubs are currently 53-36 and in first place in the National League Central.

If it weren’t for a medicore past two weeks, the Cubs would likely hold baseball’s best record.

However, the loss of pitcher Carlos Zambrano to a shoulder injury has certainly hurt. The injury doesn’t appear to be serious, but the Cubs are concerned it could linger.

The bullpen has simply been fantastic, particularly the back end. Setup man Carlos Marmol has been great, and closer Kerry Wood seems to have found his niche.

The Cubs will likely look to trade for a top starting pitcher now that the Milwaukee Brewers have acquired ace C.C. Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians.
