The Chicago Cubs have activated outfielder Reed Johnson from the disabled list.
The outfielder had been out since June 18 because of back spasms.
Infielder Eric Patterson was optioned back to Triple-A to make room for Johnson.
Johnson was hitting .271 with 3 home runs and 31 RBIs in 56 games before the injury.
Johnson was cut from the Toronto Blue Jays toward the end of spring training as he failed to make the roster as a reserve outfielder.
He was hurt for much of last season, which probably hurt his chances of sticking with the Blue Jays.
