Just when everyone was beginning to say the New York Yankees were dead, they used a weekend sweep on the road against the hot-hitting Baltimore Orioles to show signs of life.
It also didnt hear that the Boston Red Sox lost twice over the weekend to the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing the Yankees to pick up a couple of games on their biggest rival and, more importantly, the leader in the wild card race.
Pitching was certainly at a premium in Baltimore this weekend, as each team showed little ability to bring anyone to the mound who could get an important out.
Sundays game was probably the most entertaining and grueling, as the Yankees held on for an 8-7 win in a game that took over four hours to play and featured some awful umpiring from behind the plate.
Still, hitting is going to come and go, even for the powerful Yankees, and it will be critical that they find some quality starting pitching in the final month of the season if they have any realistic chance at catching the Red Sox and Minnesota Twins in the wild card race. |
