Quietly, driver Tony Stewart and team owner Joe Gibbs have been talking about a split.

Stewart has approached Gibbs and mentioned the possibility of being released from his contract after this year. His contract runs through 2009.

The team admits Stewart has options but says they have no plans for him to be racing anywhere else through 2009.

The reason for the speculation is that Stewart has an interest in owning his own team.
