New York Yankees bench coach Don Mattingly has long been thought to be one of the logical heir apparent’s to manager Joe Torre, but the former first baseman doesn’t want to follow in the legend’s footsteps, at least not yet.

Mattingly has apparently informed the top Yankees’ brass that he is not ready to take over as manager of the club and would feel uncomfortable replacing Torre.

The fact Mattingly has made such a decision may be one of the reasons Torre has not yet been fired and the organization is reconsidering what they will do with the embattled manager.
