As a boy growing up in New Orleans, Marsalis was given a trumpet by Al Hurt at the age of six. When he reached the age of twelve, he won a competition playing Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat major with the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra. At the age of 17, he became the youngest musician ever to be admitted to Tanglewood's Berkshire Music Center.
Marsalis made his way through the jazz world studying with teachers such as 'Sweets' Edison (from Count Basie's epochal 1930's band) and Clark Terry (of Duke Ellington's 1950 Orchestra). He joined Miles Davis's great rhythm section alongside Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and Ron Carter. He also learned from drummer Elvin Jones, (from John Coltrane's quartet) and John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Marsalis will always remain in a league of his own among the greatest of trumpeters. His lifelong involvement in classical music has led to his recording Haydn, Hummel and Mozart trumpet concertos from the age of 21. He has recorded 16 classical and more than 30 jazz records. He has performed with leading orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Berlin Philharmonic and the Czech National Orchestra. He is the only artist ever to win Grammy awards for both jazz and classical records, and the only artist to win Grammy awards in five consecutive years.
As both a jazz performer and composer he is known for his extensive knowledge of jazz and jazz history but is considered a classical virtuoso as well. He is the Artistic Director of Jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York.
Although some critics have found issue with his place of prominence in the world of jazz today, other jazz critics consider him the 'savior' of pure jazz from pop to fusion and noise. Still others have regarded his notion of jazz in his compositions as 'regressive'.
Whatever the case may be, Marsalis has achieved more than musical accomplishments. Wynton Marsalis is active in raising funds for charitable organizations and has been a tireless advocate for the rebuilding of New Orleans culturally, socially and economically. He is committed to the improvement of life for all, giving freely of his time and talents in any way he can to inspire those around him. Marsalis has been granted upwards of 20 (or more) honorary degrees in music from esteemed universities, the most recent being in 2009 when he was granted an honorary Doctor of Music from Harvard University and a Doctor of Arts from Northwestern University.
Of all his legacies, perhaps one of the most important is his siring of other musical prodigies, especially his sons Branford, Delfeayo and Jason, each of whom is a jazz great in his own right.
