Known for his rich baritone vocals, the Brooklyn-born R & B producer/singer's career spans over three decades. His unique interpretations of pop classics in the 1980's with artists Jennifer Holiday, Kool & the Gang, Gerald Albright, Billy Ocean, Regina Belle, Mica Paris, and others, yielded several of his early CD's, including "Will Downing" (1988), "Come Together as One" (1989).

His first solo album, "Will Downing" in 1988 featured Downing's cover of John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme', which brought him critical acclaim when the album reached number 4 on the Billboard charts.

Downing's best-selling album to date, "Love's the Place to Be," in 1993, sold over 300,000 copies in Great Britain and over 235.000 in the United States. "Moods" (1995) and "Invitation Only" (1997) followed. In 2000 "All the Man You Need" received a Grammy Awards nomination for Best Traditional R & B Album.

In December 2006, Downing was diagnosed with a muscle disorder called polymyositis, confining him to a wheel chair for a full year. "My doctors gave me a very accurate diagnosis," says Downing, "they said that I would catch hell for a year but after that I would be able to do things that I wasn't able to do before."

The singer's illness led him to become a spokesperson for the American Stroke Association, which has become a primary focus in his life. Downing is a major crusader for stroke prevention. In the wake of prominent victims of the disease, Luther Vandross, Ron Isley and Coretta Scott King, his desire to educate the African American community, which is disproportionately affected, is even greater.

On tour, Downing conducts the 'Strike Against Stroke' charity-bowling event to raise money for education. The American Heart Association has honored Downing as a Celebrity Ambassador in their national campaign, 'Power to End Stroke'.
