Wanda Sykes News and Information
Posted 3/26/2009
Wanda Sykes is a renaissance woman in the comedy industry. Known for her blunt observations of life and keen wit, she has written for a number of TV shows, performed in several sitcoms and held parts in many successful films, all while recording comedy CDs and filming specials.

Sykes grew up in Portsmouth, Va., and began her standup career with a talent competition in Washington, DC. She balanced the life of a comedian with her job as a procurement officer at the National Security Agency for five years until she moved to New York City in 1993. Chris Rock provided Sykes her first big break, opening for him at Carolines Comedy Club and joining the writing team of "The Chris Rock Show."

In addition to writing for Rock, she was a writer on "The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show," "The Downer Channel" and the 74th Annual Academy Awards in 2002. She eventually turned to the other side of the camera, filming "Wanda At Large" in 2003 for Fox. She began her run on "The New Adventures of Old Christine" in 2006 as a recurring role and is now a series regular.

In addition to her domination of television, Sykes has been featured in a number of successful films, including "Down to Earth," "Monster-in-Law," "Brother Bear 2," "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," and "Evan Almighty."

The comedian is also an author - she wrote "Yeah, I Said It" in September of 2004. Two years later she expanded her domain to cable TV - her first HBO Comedy Special, "Wanda Sykes: Sick & Tired" premiered on October 14th, 2006.
