The Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival will be held June 6th - 8th this summer, and will bring out artists such as The Flaming Lips, STS9 and Emmylou Harris.
The festival is held in Clinton State Park, just outside of Lawrence, Kansas. The festival is more intimate than larger to-dos like Bonnaroo and Coachella, due to an agreement with the state.
On Friday, June 6th Cake, Blackalicious, Ozric Tentacles, Del the Funky Homosapien, Galactic, Arrested Development and Apollo Sunshine will join The Flaming Lips, among many others. The following day will feature STS9 along with Keller Williams, Leftover Salmon, Ozomatli, Old 97s, Tea Leaf Green and The Gourds. The final day will include Harris along with Kappa Plays Sappa, Mickey Hart Band w/ Steve Kimock, That One Guy and Yard Dogs Road Show.
Wakarusa debuted in 2004 with lineup far outside of the mainstream. Headliners for the four-day event included Sound Tribe Sector 9, Robert Randolph, O.A.R. and North Mississippi Allstars. The event expanded in its next year, doubling the attendance to 50,000 people. Acts included Umphreys McGee, String Cheese Incident, Wilco and Matisyahu.
In 2006 the festival extended even more, and also initiated a broadcasting radio station just for the event. Headliners were Tim Reynolds, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, The Flaming Lips and Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. Last year, North Mississippi Allstars, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Widespread Panic and Les Claypool topped the billing, and the event was again successful.
As the name suggests, camping is an important part of Wakarusa, and the outdoors is certainly important. In addition to the performances, guests can enjoy outdoor performances such as disc golf, yoga, hiking and swimming in the local lake.
