Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2010 News

The fourth annual Virgin Mobile FreeFest is back this year at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., on Sept. 25 with headlining performances from M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, T.I., Ludacris, Joan Jett and more!
For the second year in a row, economic downturns have forced concert organizers to move the once sprawling, 3-day event at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore to this scaled down one-day version in a new location. The free admission is an added bonus with the intent of letting concertgoers simply let loose and have a good time without breaking their budgets.
This year's offering will bring several musically diverse acts including Thievery Corporation, Matt and Kim, Jimmy Eat World, The Temper Trap, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Yeasayer and Trombone Shorty.
In addition to the two main stages, this year's Free Fest also features a 'dance forest' where concertgoers can check out Chromeo, Sleigh Bells, Die Antwoord, Modeselektor and Neon Indian.
Located between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., will be expanded to accommodate crowds reaching up to 35,000, which is the number of tickets that were scooped up within the first 20 minutes of the sale. Last year's festival featured free parking for all and a "Layoff Lounge" with "surprise treats" for those who could prove unemployment. However, this year's freebies have not been announced.
The festival is a version of the V Festival in Britain, and has spawned events in Canada. The inaugural U.S. event was held in 2006 and featured performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who, The Flaming Lips, Gnarls Barkley, The Raconteurs, The Killers, Wolf Mother, The New Pornographers, and more. In 2009, Blink-182, Weezer, Taking Back Sunday and Franz Ferdinand were some of the headlining acts.
