Van Morrison News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
Van Morrison, the Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, author, poet and multi-instrumentalist, will be playing four shows in August—two in Washington, DC, and one each in Boston, and Atlantic City, NJ.

Morrison is considered by many to be one of the most important living artists of our time. His performances, which started in Ireland over 50 years ago, are rare but continuing today. Fans should not miss the opportunity to see this music legend.

Born in Ireland as George Ivan Morrison in 1945, "Van the Man" Morrison has a background in music starting from when he was just 11 years old. His father gave him his first guitar, which he taught himself using a song book, and just a few years later his first saxophone. From then on, he was involved with performing.

After a few small bands, Morrison moved on to play with who later became the International Monarchs, though they broke up in 1963. It wasn't until 1964 when he was in a band called "Them" that they got a two year recording contract after playing at the Maritime Hotel.

He started his solo career in 1965, and ran into some trouble with Bert Berns ("Here Comes The Night"). However, it was only a year later before he recorded "Brown Eyed Girl," which is still a widely-popular song.

In 1968, he released Astral Weeks, a mix of folk, jazz and stream of consciousness that has a unique Celtic sound and is still considered one of the best albums ever made. His next album, Moondance, established Morrison as a major artist. Throughout the 1970s, he built up his reputation with more live tours and new albums, a trend which he continues today.

Morrison has received six Grammy Awards, and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
