Formed in 1997 by Brendan Bayliss (guitarist), bassist Ryan Stasik, Joel Cumin (keyboards), and Mike Mirro (drums), the University of Notre Dame students based their music on the live jam-band model of their predecessors, Phish and The Grateful Dead. The band's fifth member, Andy Farag (percussion), joined the group shortly after the release of their "Greatest Hits" album and with him came his father who now manages the band.

Their popularity in the South Bend/Notre Dame area was unsurpassed by other bands, prompting more shows and a bigger fan base. After their 2000 release "One Fat Sucka," they began to practice unique improvisational techniques that are their trademark to this day. The band played the very first Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn., and clocked in more CD sales than any other band at the show in 2002.

After playing Bonnaroo again in 2004, they were dubbed the band to "have become odds-on favorites in the next'Phish sweepstakes'" by Rolling Stone Magazine. UM truly is a full on interactive jam that is taking the tradition started by the Grateful Dead to new heights. They have raised their own bar with the UMBowl format, as well very highly produced YouTube videos documenting their spontaneity. Fans have a hands-on stake in the band's direction, as the band deepens efforts to be real with their fans. For the first time, Rock Star and Rock Fan are not two separate entities.

Umphreys McGee 'UMLive.net' was formed in 2004. It was started by their 'Sound Caresser' Kevin Browning, which began to offer their shows for sale online, as well as Podcasts that are released twice a month.
