Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr., came together while still in school, and they built up a cult following in Dublin, Ireland over the following years. In 1980, Island Records signed the group and released its first UK hit, "I Will follow." The band's third album, "War," was released in 1983 and included the hit "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day."
The group became an international phenomenon with the release of "The Joshua Tree" in 1987. Over the following years, the group continued to release hit after hit and became an international force, amassing over 22 Grammy Awards, selling 140 million albums and finding the cozy spot of #22 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest artists of all time.
Some of the group's biggest during the 80's include "Where the Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "With or Without You" and "One." In the 1990's and the new millennium, the group continued to churn out chart-toppers, including "Sweetest Thing," "Beautiful Day," "Walk On," and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out of."
During this time, members of the band have also become activists for a number of important causes, most commonly international efforts such as Band Aid for Ethiopian famine relief and Self Aid for unemployment in Ireland, among many others.
