Tyler Perry is continuing his presence on the stage with his newest production: The Haves and the Have Nots.
This hilarious play runs until Nov. 25-27 at Missouri's Music Hall Kansas City. Additional Tyler Perry tour dates include Nov. 9 at the Minneapolis Orpheum Theatre; Nov. 11-13 at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago; and Nov. 19 at the Merriam Theatre in Philadelphia.
The Haves and the Have Nots centers around a three-generational family living under the same roof struggling to make ends meet. Grandma Hattie Mae is on the verge of losing her home, which puts a huge strain on her out of work son-in-law, Frank. Meanwhile, her daughter, Rose, continues to support the family with her cleaning position with a wealthy family. Luckily, Frank is soon offered a position by the wealthy family, and while it helps the family financially, it will also test his virtue when the rich, young Diane sets her sights on him.
Add into the mix a grandson that has gotten himself into some problems on the streets, and the tension has hit a new extreme. Luckily, there is also plenty of comedy thrown in, so theatre-goers will be sure to leave with a smile.
The highly-successful Tyler Perry has his hand in a little bit of everything. His impressive resume includes acting, playwriting, directing, screenwriting, producing and songwriting. After a difficult childhood with an abusive father, Perry was moved to writing as a type of therapy. After earning his GED, Perry's writing soon turned to letters, which became the inspiration for the musical I Know I've Been Changed.
After six years of tweaking and reworking the production, Perry struck gold with more than $100 million in ticket sales. This led to his first stint into the big screen with the film Diary of a Mad Black Woman in 2005. The popular movie developed a devout following, and Perry has since released several follow-ups, including Madea's Family Reunion (2006), Madea Goes to Jail (2009) and Madea's Big Happy Family (2011).
Tyler Perry also has a slew of other films, including Why Did I Get Married? (2007), Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010), Precious (2009) and For Colored Girls (2010). His success has trickled from the big screen to the small screen with several popular television shows, most notably Tyler Perry's House of Payne and Meet the Browns.
Since 1999, Tyler Perry has created a total of 13 plays, and most of them have involved him as a director, writer, producer and actor. It is this diversity that won him two BET Comedy Awards and one Black Movie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Screenwriting.
