Trey Anastsio's upcoming February tour is promising to be amazing (as usual). Many shows are already selling out. He will start in Charlottesville, Virginia on Feb 8th and then head to the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, on February 9th. He'll play Philadelphia (2/11), Wallingford, Connecticut (2/13) and Red Band, New Jersey (2/16) before going to the mid-west and then down south.

His current band members, The Classic Tab will be comprised of the same members from last fall with the addition of a horn section. The septet is 'lean and mean' as Trey puts it. "I had a lot of horn-based material and I realized that I really needed three horns to make it happen," says Trey, "?at one point the horn section was as big as five people. But if you write economical arrangements, you can sometimes make a richer sounding chord with less people?"

It's lovely to know that this artist lacks nothing in surprises, imagination and creativity.

His very latest release, "Time Turns Elastic" in 2009, is recorded with Don Hart. Last year's tour set lists are published on his web site; on September 12, 2009, he was performing with the New York Philharmonic at 8AM in the morning.

Anastasio, best known for his work with post Grateful Dead band Phish, has recorded, toured, and played back up for many, many bands since Phish.

"TAB" is short for Trey Anastasio Band. He has had many incarnations of this seemingly eternal project and TAB has seen members come and go quite often. Trey has kept several bands going at once, and named none of them. So anything that is a Trey band is a TAB.

Trey Anastasio was born Ernest Joseph Anastasio III. He played drums as a youth and then found the guitar as a teenager. His mother, Diana, was the author and editor of "Sesame Street" magazine. At Princeton Day School Trey wrote many of the songs that found their way to the Phish set lists much later.

As a philosophy major at the University of Vermont, he met the three friends that would become the band Phish, i.e., Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Jeff Holdsworth. They started out as a cover band and Anastasio hosted a radio program there.

Anastasio's social skills have been on the radical side; a suspension from the University was followed up by two later arrests and time in jail for various reasons, all of which add up to being about as against the mainstream as you can get. His fans unite with this - Trey is sort of an outlaw of rock music with relentless talent and skill as a musician.

Many have analyzed Trey's guitar playing and rig. Trey has been consistently inconsistent about his rig; he has explored many cabinet and amp combinations. Currently, however, he plays an acoustic Martin, which is noteworthy in that Martin released a 'Trey Anastasio signature model acoustic guitar' in 2005. His Mesa/Boogie MK III and Custom Audio Electronics 3 channel preamp and Groove Tubes power amp were all modified down to a simple Fender Deluxe Reverb. Lean and mean? Well, for this complex and prolific man, perhaps so.
