Tom Petty is touring this summer with his backing outfit, The Heartbreakers, still traveling behind his 2006 album "Saving Grace."
Petty has been releasing hit singles for over 30 years, many of which are still played heavily on classic rock and adult contemporary radio stations. Over the years, Petty has accumulated 18 Grammy Award nominations and has received a bevy of awards recognizing his achievements in the music industry.
Petty developed an interest in rock n roll music after meeting Elvis Presley and taking guitar lessons from Don Felder, who would later join The Eagles. The artist performed with bands throughout his youth and recorded his debut album with The Heartbreakers in 1976, which never found success in the U.S.
They found success with "Damn the Torpedoes," a few years later, which charted singles like "Dont Do Me Like That" and "Refugee." They released a number of albums before Petty took time off to form the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne in 1988. While the deaths of Orbison and Harrison shortened the run of the band, Petty still performs tracks from the group on tour.
In 1989 Petty released "Full Moon Fever," which brought him back into the spotlight as a solo artist. The album included the hits "I Wont Back Down," "Free Fallin" and "Runnin Down A Dream." He re-joined his backing group for "Into the Great Wide Open" in 1991, which included the title track and "Learning to Fly."
While Petty has lessened his studio recording in recent years, he has released a number of albums on soundtracks and compilations in between his releases. Petty spent his years touring, and really made a comeback in 2006 when he headlined the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and later that year released his most recent studio album, "Highway Companion."
