Deadheads, fuel up your trailers and pack your tie-dyed t-shirts - the prolific band is heading out on the road this spring and summer for their first tour together in five years.
Deadheads everywhere can get their fill starting on April 12th in North Carolina, and so far dates have been announced up and down the East Coast and in California, with more on the way.
Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann formed The Grateful Dead, and a musical movement, with Jerry Garcia in 1965 and performed together until Garcia's death in 1995. The group formed in San Francisco and combined an appreciation for electric rock, country, jazz and bluegrass with non-stop touring and incredible live shows.
They birthed the modern "Jam Band" moniker, all the while promoting the psychedelic rock revolution. While most bands at the time had a rehearsed set for each city on a tour, the Grateful Dead never did. They always worked off the top of their heads for the most honest performances possible.
While the band was traveling the country and introducing their fans to a new type of rock, they created some timeless albums in the process. Some of their most notable tracks include "Truckin'," "Touch of Grey," "Casey Jones," "Box of Rain," "Ripple" and "Uncle John's Band."
The lineup, which came together at a benefit for President Obama at Penn State University last year, will include the following: The Core Four Lesh, Weir, Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, as well as guitar legend Warren Haynes and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti.
