Identical twins Tegan Rain and Sara Kiersten Quinn have toured with some huge names in indie rock and pop, and they are now coming into their own.
The 27-year-olds have been on the music scene since 1995, when they called themselves PLUNK, although they lacked a drummer or bass player. They recorded "Whos in Your Band" and "Play Day" in 1998, and in 1998 they won a Battle of the Bands in Calgary, their home town.
The duo spent a lot of time on the road with many big Canadian and American artists, including Ryan Adams, Neil Young, Rufus Wainwright, The Pretenders, Ben Folds, The Killers, Cake, Hot Hot Heat, Bryan Adams and Weezer. Neil Young originally signed them to Vapor Records, but they now are signed with Warner Brothers Records to release songs in America.
The twins are known for their jovial onstage presence - they often tell jokes on stage, as they were forced to do back in the day when they didnt have enough material to fill a gig but they wanted to give fans a complete show.
Tegan and Saras songs have appeared on a number of motion picture soundtracks, including "Monster-in-Law" and "Sweet November", collections from the television shows "Greys Anatomy," "The L Word" and "Veronica Mars."
The dynamic of the band is an interesting one - while both twins write, sing, and play instruments, Sara has said that Tegan writes songs easily and discards many of them, while Saras songs take much longer to write and almost always go on their releases.
A number of bands and artists have covered songs from the duo. The Rentals covered "Not Tonight," and The White Stripes covered "Walking Like a Ghost".
The singers most recent release was "The Con," put out in July of 2007. The album was co-produced by members of Death Cab for Cutie.
