Stone Temple Pilots News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
Stone Temple Pilots are kicking off their summer travels July 1st in Los Angeles, CA, at the St. Jude Rock 'N' Roll Show, which will help raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

The group, which has enjoyed 15 Top Ten Singles and a Grammy Award for "Plush," reunited for a tour last summer - their first in five years.

The band found fame for blending grunge with alt and hard rock, along with some psychedelic sounds. They have sold over 40 million albums world wide, and have scored fifteen top ten singles on the Billboard rock charts, including six that reached No.1.

The group came together at a Black Flag concert in Long Beach in 1987, when frontman Scott Weiland and Robert DeLeo found out they were dating the same girl. They came together oddly and joined a band, Might Joe Young. Eric Kretz and Dean DeLeo completed the quartet, and they began recording.

In 1992, Stone Temple Pilots signed with Atlantic Records and their first album, "Core" was a massive commercial success, including the hits "Sex Type Thing," "Plus" and "Creep." The group gained support by opening for Rage Against the Machine and Megadeth through 1993.

The group was always a polarizer between fans and critics - in 1994 it was simultaneously voted Best New Band by Rolling Stones readers and Worst New Band by the magazines music critics. They proved their skills, though, when they took home a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for "Plush."

In 1994, the group released "Purple," which included the hits "Interstate Love Song," "Vaseline" and "Big Empty." Things went downhill, however, when Weiland's drug dependency began to prevent the group from touring. Two tours had to be cancelled. Over the tumultuous years, the band did release some successful singles, including "Sour Girl."

The group has material for a new release, but a legal battle between the band and their label is preventing the effort from being recorded, according to Spin magazine. Wieland released his sophomore album, "Happy in Galoshes," last November, and will tour solo prior to the group dates.
