The Spice Girls were a force of girl power across the globe in the 1990s, and they are making a comeback in 2008!
Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chrisholm, Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell, also known as Posh, Baby, Sporty, Scary and Ginger Spice, respectively, formed their pop band in England in 1994. Simon Fuller, the man behind the "American Idol" phenomenon, was behind the collective.
In the summer of 1996, the groups released the infectious smash hit "Wannabe." The song hit No.1 on the singles charts in 31 countries, and it eventually became the best-selling single by an all-female band ever. Their album "Spice" followed shortly after, and their ensuing success in Britain is similar to that of the Beatles. They sold 1.8 million copies of the album in seven week, and eventually sold over 7 million copies.
The Girls released more hit singles off of the album, including "Say Youll Be There," and "2 Become 1." The following year, the released "Spiceworld," which was even more popular - it sold 18 million copies. Hits from the album included "Too Much," "Stop" and "Viva Forever." "Spiceworld: The Movie" came next, including cameos from Meat Loaf, Roger Moore and Elton John. The album has earned over $100 million in ticket and DVD sales. Around this time, the group also had merchandising everywhere - their faces were plastered across the globe, with their songs to accompany.
In 1998, Halliwell announced that she was leaving the group, dropping the collective to a quartet. They went on tour as they had planned, and in 2000 released the album "Forever," which included the hits "Holler" and "Let Love Lead the Way."
By February of 2001, the band decided to separate to explore their solo careers. They never officially broke up, though, and they reunited in 2007, with Halliwell to boot, and released a greatest hits album and planned one of the most popular tours of the year, "The Return of the Spice Girls."
