Formed in 1997, STS9 originally hail from Snellville, Georgia. In late 2000, the band relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area of California. STS9 is: Hunter Brown (guitar/laptop/midi keyboard), Jeffree Lerner (percussion/laptop/handsonic) David Murphy (bass/laptop/midi keyboard), David Phipps (keyboards/laptop), and Zack Velmer (drums).

The band is known for frequent and explosive live performances with a friendly atmosphere and lots of dancing. The band is also known for their affiliation with the Maya calendar, or "13 moon calendar". Onstage, the band blends live instrumentation with electronics via Apple powerbooks.

The band's name has evolved over time. The band's first two albums were released under the name Sector 9. Their next two releases were under the band name Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Sound Tribe Sector Nine. Since their fifth release in 2003, the band has been promoting themselves under the name STS9.
