So You Think You Can Dance News and Information
Posted 3/26/2009
So You Think You Can Dance is the latest of a number of reality TV shows to take its talent on tour.

The show, hosted by Cat Deeley, debuted in 2005 in a similar format to American Idol - it was created by Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, Idol creators. Contestants are chosen from all walks of life (and dance), and they are put through an audition process in front of America.

The competition includes a wide variety of dances that the contestants must master, or at least try their very best. They include jazz, pop, pop-jazz, quickstep, Foxtrot, West Coast swing, Cuban rumba, tap, Broadway, Smooth Waltz, Argentine Tango, Paso Doble, hip hop and jive, among others.

There are always at least three judges on the show, two of which are always Lythgoe and choreographer Mary Murphy. The contestants are paired up randomly throughout the show and are assigned different forms of dance - the judges, along with guest choreographers that develop the dances each week, critique the performances. The lowest vote getters have to "dance for their lives," in a solo dance-off, and a loser is booted off of the show.

For the dancer that can make it through to the finale, the reward is great - the grand prize for contestants has varied from year to year, although it has included a cash prize, a role in a major Las Vegas show and a new car, not to mention the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."
