The Scorpions are giving their last sting this year with their final album and a retirement tour. After 17 studio albums and 40 years of rock, the Scorpions are not retiring on the sly. They're giving it all they've got with their latest album, "Sting in the Tail," and a huge final tour, which includes headlining at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, Md.

They're already in the midst of their world tour, which kicked off in April and isn't scheduled to conclude until Nov. 19 in their homeland of Germany. Supporting acts for the tour include Cinderella, Edguy and Dokken.

Their latest and last album, "Sting in the Tail," was released on March 23, 2010, and marked the band's highest chart debut in 20 years. Some of the most popular songs from the album include "Raised on Rock," "Sting In The Tail," "The Good Die Young," "Lorelei" and "Spirit Of Rock."

It's only fitting that the Scorpions final tour concludes in Germany, because that's where the band was formed more than 40 years ago.

It was 1965 when Rudolf Schenker formed the band in Hannover, Germany, but it wasn't until 1969 when Rudolf's brother Michael and Klaus Meine joined the band and released their first album, "Lonesome Crow," three years later with help from Lothar Heimberg (bass) and Wolfgang Dziony (drums).

After Michael Schenker left the band to join a British band called UFO, the Scorpions broke up. They reformed in 1973 and kept the same name. Though there have been a total of 19 band members, the current five are Klaus Meine (1970-present) on lead vocals; Matthias Jabs (1978-present) on lead guitar; Rudolf Schenker (1965-present) on rhythm guitar; Pawel Maciwoda (2003-present) on bass guitar; and James Kottak (1996-present) on drums.

Between 1974-78 the Scorpions started their rise to fame with the release of four albums: Fly to the Rainbow (1974); In Trance (1975); Virgin Killer (1976); and Taken by Force (1977). Virgin Killer and Taken By Force were both very controversial album covers. Virgin Killer depicted a nude, prepubescent girl under shattered glass and Taken by Force showed children with guns playing in a cemetery. Another controversial cover for Lovedrive (1979) shows a woman's bare breast made of bubble gum.

The song the band is probably most popular for "Rock You Like a Hurricane" came from the 1984 album "Love at First Sting" and cemented their commercial success. In all, the group has released 17 studio albums.
