Santana has turned Latin rock into a popular genre throughout the globe with a top-rated guitarist, Carlos Santana.

Carlos was born in Mexico into the family of a mariachi musician. He grew up in San Francisco and became involved with music scene in the city. He often snuck into the Fillmore Auditorium to listen to his influences, such as The Grateful Dead and Muddy Waters.

The band Santana was formed in 1966. While Santana was the namesake, he wasnt known as the leader. The group began as a blues outfit, but Latin sounds eventually infused its style. The unit performed at Woodstock before their first album was released, and the results were legendary, including an eleven-minute "Soul Sacrifice" jam.

Willie Bobs ''Evil Ways" was the first song to gain the group airplay, off of the album "Santana." The single reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The groups second album, "Abrazas," was also extremely popular. It included the hits "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va."

The group has released more than 30 albums. In 1999, the legendary collective gained a lot of steam with the collection "Supernatural," which included duets with a number of hot singers such as Lauryn Hill and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty. The album was certified Diamond by the RIAA, signifying sales of over 10 million copies.

The outfits lineup has changed over time, and the sound of the band has moved towards different musical nuances like rock and jazz, but their influence on the Latin infusion sound has always been abundantly clear.
