Ryan Adams News and Information
Posted 6/18/2009
Ryan Adams has been performing since the age of 16, perfecting his alt-country/rock singing and songwriting, matched with incredible instrumental talents.

Adams grew up listening to vinyl records with his grandmother, and by the age of 14 he was playing the drums and joined a band. Adams founded Whiskeytown in the mid-'90s with Caitlin Cary, Eric Silmore, Steve Grothmann and Phil Wandscher. The former punk-rock singer softened his sound with the new collaboration. The bands debut album, "Faithless Street” was critically acclaimed and lead to a major label release, "Strangers Almanac.”

There were a number of line-up changes from Whiskeytown over its five years in existence, rumored to be caused by the band finding Adams difficult to work with. The last release for the band was "Pneumonia” in 2001, and the members dissolved quickly after the release.

Adams wasted no time releasing a solo album - in fact, "Heatbreaker” came out in 2000. While Whiskeytown favored a country twang, as a solo artist Adams gravitated to a folk sound. While the album was a success critically, it never got off the ground commercially.

The following year, Adams released "Gold.” The album gained him two Grammy Award nominations, "Best Rock Album” and "Best Male Rock Vocal” for "New York, New York.” Oddly, Adams gained a lot of popularity for the singles video, which was filmed one week before the September 11, 2001 attacks. The video features the World Trade Center prominently in the background.

In the wake of the success of "Gold,” Adams released "Demolition” in 2002. The album included a number of tracks not featured on previous releases. The album was again critically successful but a commercial disappointment. In May, Adams joined Elton John for CMTs Crossroads. After the collaboration for the country channel, John said that "Heartbreaker” inspired him to write the album "Songs from the West Coast.”

A cover of Oasis "Wonderwall” was featured on his next album, "Love Is Hell.” Oasis singer Noel Gallagher was quoted as saying that he "never got [my] head around this song” until he heard Ryan Adams play it. The single earned a Grammy nomination for "Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.”

In 2005, Adams recorded music like there was no tomorrow. He joined forces with his backing band, The Cardinals, released two albums, "Cold Roses,” a double-disc album, and "Jacksonville City Lights.” That same year, he put out the solo album "29.” Adams also contributed three songs to the Elizabethtown soundtrack, including "Come Pick Me Up,” "English Girls Approximately” and "Words.”

After a solo tour of the U.S. and Britain in 2006, he produced Willie Nelsons "Songbird.” By June of the following year, Adams released "Easy Tiger,” which included a number of tracks that he had been debuting throughout his tours. In October of 2007, he released the EP "Follow the Lights.” He also plans to release a box-set by years end, including tracks from the unreleased "48 Hours” and "The Suicide Handbook.”
