Two of the most notable sounds in folk and blues music have joined forces, and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant seem to have an awful lot of fun doing it.
Krauss began her career as a fiddler at the age of 13, and has since become the face of contemporary bluegrass music. She has sold over 8 million albums and was awarded 20 Grammy Awards, more than any other female recording artist in history. Krauss is best known with her backing band, Union Station, but after a massive tour last year they took time off and she got right back into the studio with Plant, an unlikely partner.
Plant is best known for his time at the helm of English rock band Led Zeppelin. His time as frontman garnered him much praise, as he combined a rare musical skill combined with amazing stage presence. While Zeppelin was for a time known as a heavy metal collective, Plant always fought against that stereotype - he wanted to be known as an eclectic performer, as he certainly is with this new pairing.
The two encountered one another at a concert celebrating the music of Leadbelly, and they realized that collaborating could prove to be a success. They brought legendary producer T Bone Burnett into the mix. The trio sat in Krausss Nashville home - Burnett strumming guitar chords, Plant offering up his soulful voice and Krauss finding a perfect harmony for each sound - and the album "Raising Sand" was born and released in the Fall of 2007.
Krauss is known for her vivacious fiddle and soft soprano, while Plant has become notorious for an almost theatrical stage presence and booming tenor- and now fans who once only could hear the duo can now catch them on stage. Krauss and Plant will travel together in April.
