Move over Led Zeppelin! The infamous Robert Plant has resurrected his Band of Joy and has put together a tour schedule this summer that will outdo anything he has ever undertaken with this collection of musicians. Special guests include Patti Griffin on vocals, Darrell Scott (vocals, multi-instrumentalist), Buddy Miller on guitar, Marco Giovino on drums, and bassist Byron House. Tour starts on July 13 in Memphis, TN. So far all dates are confirmed for the multi-city tour, which will end on the 31st of July.
Robert and company are also about to release a new album with material that is familiarly folksy-bluesy to what fans have heard in his "Raising Sand" collaboration with Alison Krauss. Says Plant: "It's been a blast working on these new songs…and I'm enjoying such creativity and vitality. It's been a remarkable change of direction for all of us and as a group we all seem to have developed a new groove."
Plant's success as a solo and collaborative artist has shown that there is definitely life beyond Led Zeppelin and Rock & Roll. An old dog not only learns new tricks, but inspires others of his genre to branch out and find their authentic voices. His 2009 Grammy Award-winning Album of the Year, "Rising Sand", as well as his legendary work with bluegrass singer Alison Krauss seemed as though it would be hard to top, but Plant has with this new endeavor.
The new album, "Robert Plant - Band of Joy" draws from a wide range of musical styles and finds Plant putting his spin on the works of Los Lobos, Richard Thompson and many more. Guitarist Buddy Miller has served Plant well in this project, helping with the selection of artists to be in the band, making the new album a true collaborative venture.
"The idea of just stepping forward with other people and letting them take the lead is an exciting prospect. And with Buddy, Patty and Darrell on this record, it promises to be exciting," says Plant.
Plant is best known for his work with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham in their band Led Zeppelin. Since Bonham's untimely death in 1980, Plant's insatiable appetite for music has never died. Plant has recorded many solo projects and collaborated with a host of musicians. In 1995 he and Jimmy Page embarked on the 'No Quarter' project, which explored many styles from world music to psychedelic-rock of the West Coast.
Plant received the Polar Music Prize in 2006 along with other members of Led Zeppelin. "Raising Sand" won five Grammys, as well as best album of the year and best record of the year for "Please Read the Letter," and Best Contemporary Americana/Folk Album, and Best Country Collaboration With Vocals.
