Ricky Gervais' "Science" Tour is selling out in the UK and the US. This infectiously funny man, who hosted the Academy Awards this year, is one person fans can't get enough of. The tour is supported by the HBO animated release of 'The Ricky Gervais Show', whose original version enjoyed record-breaking pod casts in 2009. His tour dates in the US start in May with 3 shows in New York at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on the 12th, 13th, and 14th, and two shows in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theatre on the 15th and 16th.
Gervais is perhaps best known for the hapless, socially awkward, and entirely incompetent manager David Brent in the British television series, 'The Office'. With Gervais' at the helm, the series was later adapted for the American version of "The Office," which has had just as much critical and popular success on this side of the pond.
Gervais' first successful stand-up comedy show, entitled "Rubbernecker," debuted at the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. By 2003, Gervais found himself touring through the UK with a stand-up comedy show entitled, "Animals." In 2004 he embarked on the "Politics" tour. Both of these shows were recorded for release on DVD and television. In 2007 a third installment of these shows, entitled "Fame," was released. The tickets to this trilogy sold out within 45 minutes of them going on sale.
His closest alliances remain with the co-writer and co-director of "The Office," Stephen Merchant, and fellow actor Karl Pilkington. The trio recently launched a new animated show on HBO, "The Ricky Gervais Show," where the premise revolves around the three characters sharing their thoughts about such deep subjects as philosophy, population control, and toilets.
Gervais announced in a recent press release that he and Stephen Merchant will be writing a new show called "Life's Too Short," which they describe as, "A cross between 'Extras' and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and 'One Foot in the Grave' but with a dwarf. That is out and out funny."
Gervais resides with his partner of 25 years, Jane Fallon, in Hampstead, England. He is a devoted animal rights supporter and says he has been a wildlife documentary lover since his childhood. He is an admitted atheist, which was revealed during an interview with Kristy Young for Desert Island Discs. He is close to comedian Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) and has been a frequent guest. His film credits include "Ghost Town" and "The Invention of Lying." He has also written a best-selling book series entitled "Flanimals."
