R. Kelly is one of the premiere R&B singers of the past two decades, excelling as a singer, songwriter, producer and instrumentalist known for either his extremely sensual or inspirational, uplifting lyrics.
Kelly formed Public Announcement, which gained massive popularity after the groups debut album, "Born Into the 90s" went platinum - hits from the album included "Honey Love" and "Dedicated." Kelly left the group the following year and released "12 Play," including the hit singles "Sex Me (Pt.1)," "Your Bodys Callin Me" and "Bump N Grind." In 1994 he worked on Aaliyahs debut, "Age Aint Nothing But a Number," which was extremely popular.
In 1995, Kelly released a self-titled album that went platinum five times. The album included some of his most notable ballads, such as "I Cant Sleep (Baby If I)" and "Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)," which solidified his spot as an urban crooner. At the same time, he was flexing his muscles as a songwriter, penning the Michael Jackson hit "You Are Not Alone."
In 1996, Kelly seemed to move from the sexual to the inspirational - he performed "I Believe I Can Fly" for the Space Jam soundtrack and "Im Your Angel" with Celine Dion for his 1998 double disc "R." Other hits from the disc included "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time" and "When A Womans Fed Up."
After writing a number of songs for top rappers, Kelly joined forces with Jay-Z for "The Best of Both Worlds" in 2002, which was a mild disappointment for both artists. In 2003, he released "Chocolate Factory," and it was extremely popular - it yielded three hit singles, "Ignition Remix," "Step in the Name of Love," and "Snake." Kelly also joined the boy band craze, forming B2K and producing the hit "Bump, Bump, Bump."
In 2004, the singer seemed to relieve his music of the sexual undertones and released "Happy People/U Saved Me." The double disc was half sex-free secular songs and half inspirational album. In 2004, Jay Z and Kelly joined forced again for "Unfinished Business," which was more commercially successful and led to the controversial Best of Both Worlds Tour, which turned into a solo Jay-Z outing halfway through.
Kelly released the beginnings of a mini-opera, "Trapped in the Closet" in the summer of 2005 - it wound up as a 22-volume saga, released in the summer of 2007. Prior to that release, Kelly put out "Double Up" in May of 2007, which included the hit single "Im a Flirt (Remix)."
While Kelly has also been plagued with his share of controversy, his domination of the R&B and pop charts cannot be denied - while he has changed his style over the years, it is clear that he is doing something right!
