Queen Latifah

News and Information
Queen Latifah is a true Renaissance woman in the hip-hop game - she is a rapper and singer, plus film and television actress. She has been nominated for six Grammy Awards with one win under her belt, plus nominations for an Emmy Award and an Academy Award.

Latifah, AKA Dana Elaine Owens, grew up in Newark, New Jersey. She began her career beat boxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh, and Fab Five Freddy was introduced to the artist with her single "Princess of the Posse." Eventually, Latifah released "All Hail the Queen" in 1989 when she was 19. A following album, Black Reign, included her first real hit "U.N.I.T.Y.," which also earned her a Grammy Award. In 1998 she released her fourth album, "Order in the Court." The singer took a break to concentrate on acting for a few years, and released "The Dana Owens Album," a collection of jazz standards, in 2004.

Latifahs acting career really took off in 1991 - she scored supporting roles in the films "House Party 2," "Juice" and "Jungle Fever." She then broke into the small screen- between 1993 and 1998, Latifah starred in "Living Single" on Fox. She also had her own talk show, "The Queen Latifah Show" from 1999 through 2001.

In 1996, Latifah had her first staring roll in "Set It Off." She was also featured in "Living Out Loud" and "The Bone Collector." The singer really gained mainstream success with her role as Matron "Mama" Morton in the Oscar-winning film "Chicago," for which she was nominated as Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Following her success, she starred in a number of successful comedies, including "Bringing Down the House," "Scary Movie 3," "Barbershop 2: Back in Business," "Taxi," "Beauty Shop" and "Last Holiday."

Latifah also has tried her hand at being a spokesperson - she currently models for CoverGirl Cosmetics (she is developing her own line of cosmetics, the CoverGirl Queen Connection), Curvation Ladies Underwear and Pizza Hut.

More recently, Latifah is focusing on her singing again. She was featured at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles in July of 2007 for a life jazz concert, which included a 10-piece live orchestra and her backup singers, The Queen Latifah Orchestra. She will release "Travlin Light" in the fall. Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Christian McBride are all feature on the album.
