Pink Martini was formed in 1994 by pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale in Portland. It consists of 13 members and tours regularly throughout six of the seven continents. They draw their inspiration from all types of music and can't be easy categorized into any one genre.
Lauderdale described the band as "music of the world without being world music. If the United Nations had a house band in 1962 hopefully Pink Martini would be that band."
To date, Pink Martini has played with 30 other orchestras, including the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; the Boston Pops; and the BBC Concert Orchestra in London.
The band has released five albums since their inception, including Sympathique (1997), Hang on Little Tomato (2004), Hey Eugene! (2007), Splendor in the Grass (2009) and Joy to the World (2010). They have also released one DVD, Discover the World: Live in Concert (2009).
Band members include founding member Laudedale, vocalist China Forbes and musicians Robert Taylor, Gavin Bondy, Brian Lavern Davis, Derek Rieth, Martín Zarzar, Phil Baker, Timothy Nishimoto, Nicholas Crosa, Pansy Chang, Dan Faehnle and Maureen Love.
