Phil Vassar has influenced the country music game in many ways, from showing honky-tonk performers that the piano could be successfully added to the genre to penning the songs that created its prominence. He now reflects on his time as a main player in the game as a judge on the hit reality TV show Nashville Star.

Vassar was born and raised in Lynchburg, Va., and attended James Madison Univeristy on a track scholarship where his interest in music blossomed. He moved to Nashville after college, playing piano and singing on the tour circuit. When a clubgoer showed Vassars demo to his father, Engelbert Humperdinck, the singer wound up recording Vassars song "Once in a While," beginning the young mans career as a songwriter.

Vassar scored a publishing contract with EMI, churning out hits for the likes of Collin Raye ("Little Red Rodeo"), Tim McGraw ("For a Little While"), BlackHawk ("Postmarked Birmingham,") and Jo Dee Messina ("Bye Bye" and "Im Alright.")

In 1998, Vassar signed his own deal with Arista and was named the 1999 Country Songwriter of the Year by ASCAP. In 2000, his self-titled debut included the massively popular singles "Six-Pack Summer," "Carlene," "Just Another Day in Paradise" and "Thats When I Love You." In 2002, Vassar had amassed three Top Five hits in 2002. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA.

"American Child" followed in 2002, while he was still riding high on the success of his debut. In 2004, he released "Shaken Not Stirred," which included his second No.1 single, "In A Real Love." His first best-of compilation came out in 2006 and included "Last Day of My Life," which hit the No.2 spot on the Country Charts. "Prayer of a Common Man" is his most recent effort, which includes the single "This is My Life."
