The ensemble became the official '"Pat Metheny Group". The group's first album was entitled, "The Pat Metheny Group" and was released in 1978.

Metheny's technical capabilities combined with his prodigy ear for sound make him a visionary. His Gibson guitar and his digital delay units, along with synthesizers and his piano set the stage for more than experimentation in 1977. Metheny was a major force and influence for many of his contemporaries, and has constantly refined his style.
