The New Pornographers are a Canadian indie rock group supergroup in the same vein as Cheap Trick and The Cars, but with more of an emphasis on musical structures such as harmonies and melodies.
The band is clearly a supergroup - Carl Newman of Zumpano, John Collins of the Evaporators, Dan Bejar of the Destroyers, Blaine Thurier and Fisher Rose, plus guest vocalist Neko Case, all lend their talents to the unit.
The bands history began in 1996 when Newman released "Goin Through Changes" under the Zumpano name. Eventually, the other members began to join him, and the first unofficial rehearsal was in 1996. The group only completed three songs before members got wrestles - Case left for Chicago, Thurier began to work on a film, and others left as well. Eventually, electric drummer Kurt Dahle and guitarist Todd Fancey joined; the group reunited and completed their first album, "Mass Romantic."
The group traveled across North America to support the album, and then they separated again to work on other projects in 2002. Bejar headed out with Destroyer, Case went with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Eventually, though, the group got back together to record "Electric Version," which was released in the spring of 2003. In 2005, they released "Twin Cinema," and "Challengers" was put out in 2007. A live album, "LIVE!" was released in 2006.
The group has had a number of successful singles to increase their fan base, including "Letter from an Occupant" in 2002, "Use it" and "Sing Me Spanish Techno" in 2006 and "My Rights Versus Yours" in 2007.
While the band has been performing together more consistently in recent years, they always leave fans guessing about what is coming next - stay tuned!
