My Morning Jacket is finishing up its "Spring Excursion Tour" with final shows in Nashville, Tenn., Atlanta, GA, and, a show April 24th at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival to follow. They'll also perform in Columbia, Md., on May 1st at Merriweather Post Pavilion and at the Sasquatch Festival in George, WA, Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31. This summer, the band will also appear with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as the supporting guest for several dates in August.
The band that started in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1998 is currently comprised of Jim James on guitar, Tom Blankenship on bass, J. Glenn on drums, and Johnny Quaid on second guitar. Jim James tells interviewers, "It's a short tour, but we're partial to the southern states."
MMJ cites their influences from a wide range of musical styles. They refuse to be pigeonholed into any style. They have coined a unique sound discovery they recorded once inside a grain silo, and BAM! MMJ invented what has never been heard or seen before.
With their 2002 ATO Record contract the band released "It Still Moves" in 2003. In 2004 they released, "Early Recordings Chapter 1- The Sandworm Cometh" and "Early Recordings Chapter 2 - Learning," documenting the formation of the band from it's early years.
In 2005, the critically acclaimed album "Z" was released. "Z" enjoyed more airplay and commercial success than previous albums. Their movie debut also took place in that same year in the film "Elizabethtown," and as contributing songwriters for the movie, "Where to Begin."
In 2007 the band recorded their album, "Evil Urges", which was followed by a show at Radio City Music Hall. 2008 marked the fifth performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival for the band. They played a legendary four-hour set to an army of fans who didn't miss a beat.
"Evil Urges," their last album, was nominated for best alternative rock album in 2008. The album has been compared to Prince, Al Green, Neil Young and Radiohead all rolled into one. Their intention from the beginning has been to explore all styles of music and make the sound for which they have now become famous. Don't miss this band!
