This June, Mumford & Sons are traveling across the states for the 'Super Fun U.S. Tour.' The tour kicks off on June 3 at The City Market in Kansas City, Mo., and runs through June 15-16 at The Fillmore in Detroit. Throughout the tour, various bands will be joining the Sons including Matthew & the Atlas, Nathaniel Rateliff, Cake, and The Low Anthem.
Along the way, the band also has stops at The Pageant in St. Louis on June 5; the Ashville Civic Center in N.C. on June 7 and the Raleigh Amphitheatre in N.C. on June 8. The northern-most concert will be held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., on June 9, followed by a gig at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta on June 12 and Harrah's in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on June 14.
In October 2007, Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane formed Mumford & Sons in West London and within six months began working with a management company. Though their manager they were introduced to their future record label, though they weren't immediately picked up because the label wanted them to gather a larger fan base. Soon, the band was playing alongside popular UK groups like Peggy Sue, Sons of Noel and Adrian, and Alessi's Ark. The summer of 2008 also marked their first performance at the Glastonbury Festival.
Just over one year later, Mumford & Sons debuted their first recorded material, the EP Love Your Ground.
For the remainder of 2008 and 2009, Mumford & Sons toured extensively in the UK and US, performing mainly in smaller venues and working on creating new music. In October 2009, they released their first studio album, Sigh No More.
Though the band members are uniquely known for being able to play multiple instruments, at the time they didn't even own their own instruments. Luckily they were able to finance their first album, because it eventually led to their record deal with Island Records in the UK and Glassnote Records in the US.
Popular songs from their debut album include "Little Lion Man," "The Cave," and "Timshel," which have been heard on both the Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
In December 2010, the band earned their first Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Song and Best New Artist. Though they didn't win an award, they were able to perform at the ceremony and gain even more fans.
