On February 28, Morrissey will kick off his U.S. tour in Boca Raton, Florida. Morrissey is also due to release his ninth solo album, "Years of Refusal" in the U.S. on February 17.
As frontman of the Smiths, Sean Patrick Morrissey led what many find to be the most influential indie bands of Britain during the '80s, and one of the most influential figures of alternative rock.
The Smiths were musical icons in Britain, influencing guitar-based performers during their time and for years to come. In the U.S., however, they were more of an underground collection, with Morrissey gaining much more popularity as a solo artist.
Morrissey grew up in Manchester, England, and became a songwriter as a teen after becoming obsessed with music. He formed the Smiths in 1982, and the hit single "Hand in Glove" was debuted in 1983. As the band gained popularity, he became known for erratic behavior with the press, filled with outrageous statements to match his onstage behavior.
When the bands 1984 debut became a smash hit, Morrissey began political activistism - he ardently opposed Margaret Thatcher, and supported vegetarianism. After releasing "Meat is Murder," the band parted ways in 1987 and Morrissey began his solo career.
Hits from his solo career included "Suedehead" and "Everyday is Like Sunday" off of his first album, "Viva Hate." While his follow-up album, "Bona Drag" in 1999, didnt appeal to his British audience, he was welcomed with open arms in the U.S., where his tours were selling out constantly.
His next album was "Vauxhall and I," and he was eventually supported by MTV and his popularity grew. He was always most popular in the U.S. as a tour draw, even when he wasnt recording new albums. In 2004, he released "You Are the Quarry," and in 2006 he put out "Ringleader of the Tormentors."
Morrissey faced much controversy in his homeland - his miserable outlook and feminine persona struck a chord with many critics, while he connected with the youth of the country. While his solo tunes werent quite as influential in America, he was still adored by millions of fans.
