Actress/comedian MoNique gained fame for her portrayal of Niki Parker on the UPN series "The Parkers," and since the show ended in 2004, she has toured on the stand-up circuit, starred in films, authored best-selling books, hosted a number of shows and even addressed social injustice with a serious documentary.
MoNique grew up in Baltimore, Md., and she rose through the ranks of stand-up comedy before nabbing a role on "The Parkers" in 1999. While starring on the show she was featured in a number of films, mostly directed towards urban audiences, including "Queens of Comedy," "Two Can Play That Game" and "Soul Plane." Over the past five years, MoNiques film roles became juicier, even landing a starring role in 2006s "Phat Girlz" and "Steppin: The Movie."
In addition to her impressive film career, she has had a number of hosting gigs for television, including "Its Showtime at the Apollo," the 3rd, 4th, and 7th Annual BET Awards and "MoNiques Fat Chance."
Possibly her best-known hosting gig was on VH1s "Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School." MoNique was the host and the principal of the school, teaching the fallen girls of "Flavor of Love" how to act with dignity and class. She has also had small television parts in "Nip/Tuck," "Thank God Youre Here" and "The Boondocks." She currently has a reoccurring role on the hit ABC TV show "Ugly Betty."
While most of MoNiques exploits are humorous, her 2007 documentary "MoNique Behind Bars" focused on the lives of incarcerated women. While she clearly enjoys her time behind the camera, the funny lady also has been spending a lot of time doing stand-up tours around the country. She has spent time on a number of great stand-up venues, including Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam. .
