After 13 years, Michael Franti and Spearhead have found themselves back with Capitol Records with a new album due out in September 2010. The Sound of Sunshine is Michael Franti and Spearhead's seventh studio album. In honor of the band's newest release in two years, Franti is kicking off a 40-city North American tour on Sept. 22 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.
Following the performance, Franti and Spearhead also have performances at the Dallas House of Blues on Sept. 30; Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Oct. 13; Philadelphia's Electric Factory on Oct. 30; Portland's State Theatre and more!
The group is also scheduled to play two tour dates in Canada before wrapping things up on Nov. 14 at the Detroit Crofoot Ballroom.
Michael Franti's 20+ year history in the music industry has spanned three bands and a successful solo career. His childhood was spent in Oakland, where he was adopted by a Finnish couple. While he was attending the University of San Francisco, Franti's interest in music grew, and he decided to create a band.
The result was The Beatnigs, which lasted from 1986-90 and was comprised of Franti and Rono Tse. During the four-year span, the band released a self-titled album, but they never achieved much success outside of the bay area.
In 1991, Franti and Tse disbanded The Beatnigs and formed The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy with Charlie Hunter, Mark Pistel and Jack Dangers. Ironically, the Heroes music was nothing like that of The Beatnigs, as they relied more on hip hop and industrial-sounding music. Their song lyrics railed against government and injustice, like a verse from "California Uber Alles: "I cut health care and I raise prices/Sales tax, snack tax, excise tax/Information attack with a newspaper tax/Hit the pocket books of working families/Increase tuition at the universities..."
Though they had minor success and even toured with U2, they only lasted until 1994 when Franti founded Spearhead.
In 1994, Franti and a handful of musicians, including Carl Young, formed Spearhead. With the new band, Franti's music found a fresh start and he departed from the hard, industrial sound of The Disposable Heroes and relied more on soul and funk music.
The band's first studio album was September 1994's Home, which featured the popular hit "Positive." Their sophomore album came in the form of 1997's Chocolate Supa Highway, which drew again on hip hop and reggae.
Following their first two albums, Spearhead left Capitol Records and began recording under their own label, Boo Boo Wax. Since "Spearhead" was still owned by Capitol Records, they changed their name to Michael Franti and Spearhead.
Under Boo Boo Wax, Michael Franti and Spearhead released two albums, Stay Human (2001) and Everyone Deserves Music (2003), before switching to ANTI Records for their next two albums: Yell Fire! (2006) and All Rebel Rockers (2008).
Ironically, Michael Franti and Spearhead returned to Capitol Records in 2010 for their seventh studio album, The Sound of Sunshine. It features twelve tracks, including the hits "Shake It" and "Hey Hey Hey."
Throughout his career, Michael Franti has also released solo work: Live at the Baobab (2000) and Songs from the Front Porch (2003).
