Michael Bolton dominated the soft rock ballad in the mid-'80s, bringing his blue-eyed soul and raspy voice to millions of adoring fans across the globe.

Bolton grew up in Connecticut, and initially found success in a genre that was anything but soft - he was the lead singer of Blackjack, a heavy metal band toward the end of the 1970s. In 1983, he changed his name to Michael Bolton and began is ascent to superstardom.

Boltons self-titled album with his new, softer sound was released in 1983 and included his first single, "Fools Game." His first hit as a songwriter, "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" was a success, and he co-wrote "I Found Someone" in 1985.

The singer gained acclaim as a singer with a cover of Otis Reddings "(Sittin On) the Dock of the Bay," featured on his breakthrough album, "Hunger," in 1987 - the album also included the single "Thats What Love is All About." Next was "Soul Provider," released two years later in 1989. The album reached the Top 10 and was certified platinum four times. The album had five Top 40 singles, including "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," "How Can We Be Lovers" and "When Im Back on my Feet Again."

Boltons next album, "Time, Love & Tenderness" was released in 1989. The collection was even more successful, including the hits "When a Man Loves a Woman," "Love is a Wonderful Thing" and the title track. By this time, Bolton had collected a number of Grammy Awards, and his next release was a compilation of covers. His next original album, "The One Thing," was released in 1993 and included the hit single "Said I Loved you…But I Lied." Next up was a best-of album and a holiday collection the following year.

In 1997, Bolton released "All That Matters" - after the albums release; the singer took a reprieve from the spotlight. "Bolton Swings Sinatra" is the most recent album from the singer - it was put out in 2006.
