MGMT are in the midst of their North American tour in support of their newly released album, "Congratulations." The Congratulations Tour kicked off in April and runs through August 14 in Columbia, Md. Some notable stops along the way include the Sasquatch Music Festival in George, Wash., on May 31; Lollapalooza on Aug. 8 in Chicago; and spots on Saturday Night Live and The Late Show with David Letterman.
"Congratulations" was released on April 13. It is the follow-up album to the band's break-out album "Oracular Spectacular" in 2007.
Everyone's favorite up-and-coming band MGMT was formed in 2005 by Wesleyan University students Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden, but didn't gain much attention until the release of their second studio album "Oracular Spectacular."
Goldwasser and Van Wyngarden weren't intending to create their own band when they started comparing musical tastes and experimenting with noise rock and electronica. Their first EP, "Time To Pretend," came out in August 2005. They toured small clubs in support of the album and signed a record contract with Columbia Records in 2006. One year later, they were opening for major bands like Of Montreal, Radiohead, M.I.A. and Beck.
In 2008, MGMT had their biggest year to date. Following "Oracular Spectacular," they had a festival-rich tour including stops at Austin City Limits, Coachella, Bonnaroo, T in the Park, Reading and more. MGMT found themselves touring with Paul McCartney in 2009. They also won their first Grammy Award in 2009 for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for "Electric Feel."
This year, MGMT received two Grammy Award nominations: Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance for their song "Kids." They're also headlining their first tour in support of their third studio album, "Congratulations."
