Maxwell

News and Information

Maxwell is traveling this fall to support a new trilogy of albums, expected to be released through 2010.

The singer, known as a vital voice in the development of the neo-soul movement, has released three LPs since his debut in 1996, and all have gone platinum and were received positively by critics.

Maxwell developed an interest in music at the age of 17 when he began writing songs and using a keyboard. He was inspired by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Prince, which differed strongly from his shy persona in school.

The singer signed a contract with Columbia Records in 1994 and in 1996 he released "Maxwells Urban Hang Suite." It caught on after the single "Ascension (Dont Ever Wonder)," and gained him a name in the neo-soul movement. The album eventually earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B album.

Next up was an episode of MTC Unplugged in New York City, where he performed "This Womans Work" for the first time. The Kate Bush cover became one of his trademark songs over his career.

"Embrya" was Maxwells second studio album, and it found extreme commercial and critical success. "Fortunate" was the top single from the album, which was almost Billboards top R&B single of 1999.

"Now" was released in 2001 and included the single "This Womans Work," which was recorded in a chilling falsetto for the normally deep-voiced singer.

Maxwells next album is "Black Summers Night," which will be released as three separate albums: "Black" in 2008, "Summers" in 2009 and "Night" in 2010.
